EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
Analytical Instrumentation

We have the following analytical instruments in the aqueous geochemistry laboratories:

bullet

A Thermo Scientific iCAP 6300 ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer) with solid-sate detector and axial torch

bullet

A Dionex ICS3000 ion chromatography work station with dual gradient pumps

bullet

A Shimdazu UV-visible spectrophotometer

bullet

A Perkin Elmer Spectrum 1000 FTIR spectrometer

bullet

A Mantech automated titrator

bullet

Assorted ion-specific electrodes (including pH electrodes) and several research grade pH meters

Within the College of Science at the University of Idaho we have access to:

bullet

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)

bullet

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

bullet

Powder x-ray diffraction

bullet

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction

bullet

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)

bullet

Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS)

bullet

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR)

bullet

Raman and FTIR spectroscopy

Via reciprocal agreement with Washington State University (eight miles away) we have access to

bullet

Electron microprobe analysis (EMPA)

bullet

Inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)

bullet

X-ray fluorescence (XRF)

bullet

Stable isotope analysis

High-Temperature/High-Pressure Equipment

We have the following equipment for experimental geochemistry/petrology:

bullet

Ten cold-seal pressure vessels with furnaces

bullet

A flow-through hydrothermal apparatus consisting of a 100-mL, Bridgeman-type, A286 autoclave, a constant flow pump and furnace

bullet

A Hydropac L'il Critter argon gas pump

bullet

Two Bridgeman-type, 250-mL, gold-lined autoclaves constructed of alloy A286 with furnaces

bullet

Twelve Barnes-type, 1-L, confined gasket-closure pressure vessels with six furnaces

bullet

Six 300-mL, confined gasket-closure pressure vessels with three furnaces

bullet

Two Blue M convection ovens and autoclaves for silica-tube solubility experiments

bullet

A TIG arc welder for sealing precious metal capsules

bullet

A hydrogen-oxygen torch for sealing silica tubes

bullet

A hydrogen-electrode concentration cell suitable for potentiometric titrations or solubility measurements with in-situ pH measurement up to 300 °C (under construction)

bullet

A wide variety of pressure gauges, temperature controllers and ancillary equipment for high-temperature/high-pressure experiments

With this equipment we can carry out a variety of solubility and phase equilibrium experiments at conditions ranging from ambient to 800 °C and 2000 bars.
