CORIOLIS EFFECT AND WINDS; CYCLONES AND ANTICYCLONES

  • Coriolis force/effect

  • Earth rotation and wind deflection

    • Deflection to the right in the Northern Hemisphere; to the left in the Southern Hem!

  • Latitude and strength of Coriolis Effect

  • Coriolis Deflection on the apparent path of the flight of an object

  • Cyclones and anticyclones - wind deflection

  • Properties of cyclones and anticyclones

    • Inspiral into Lows/Cyclones vs Outspiral out of Highs/Anticyclones

    • Clockwise outspiral from Highs/Anticyclones in the Northern Hemisphere vs anticlockwise air movement into Cyclones

    • Southern Hemisphere reverses:  Anticlockwise outspiral from Highs/Anticyclones; Clockwise inspiral into Lows/Cyclones in Southern Hemisphere

    • Descending/subsiding/sinking within Highs/Anticyclones vs uplifting/rising/ ascending air within Lows/Cyclones

    • Northern Hemisphere vs Southern Hemisphere movement directions

Really focus on the "rules" for how "Lows/Cyclones" and "Highs/Anticyclones" work in terms of whether air is rising or descending, insprialing or outspiriling, clockwise or counterclockwise as viewed from above.  Don't forget that the clockwise-anticlockwise directions reverse between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres!
