  • It is a pathway for the sense of smell.
  • It contains axons from some of the neurons in the olfactory bulb.
  • Some of those axons go directly to the phylogenetically oldest part of the cerebral cortex where they synapse.
  • Others travel through the anterior commissure to the contralateral (opposite side) olfactory bulb.
