hippocampus
(hippo camp' us)
- This intricate arrangement of phylogenetically old cortex is
tucked out of sight on the medial side of the temporal lobe.
- It is important for converting short term memory to more
permanent memory, and for recalling spatial relationships in the world about
us.
- It is also part of the limbic lobe.
- It got its name because its shape resembles that of a
'seahorse'.
