• This intricate arrangement of phylogenetically old cortex is tucked out of sight on the medial side of the temporal lobe.

• It is important for converting short term memory to more permanent memory, and for recalling spatial relationships in the world about us.

• It is also part of the limbic lobe.

• It got its name because its shape resembles that of a 'seahorse'.
