COLLEGE AWARDS

John B. George Memorial Award (presented to the top graduating senior in the College of Science)

  • Tyrel J. Johnson, Mathematics and Physics

Tyrel is from Laclede, Idaho, and a graduate of Priest River Lamanna High School.  He was nominated for the George Award by both the Mathematics and Physics Departments.  He graduated with B.S. degrees in mathematics and physics with a 4.0 grade point average.  He served as a tutor in the Polya Math Learning Center and worked in the laboratory of Dr. Chris Berven of the Department of Physics.  He completed an internship last summer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Tyrel will begin graduate school at the University of Maryland majoring in Physics.

Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

  • Jeremiah D. Degenhardt, Biological Sciences

Jeremiah is from Spokane, Washington, and was home schooled.  He began his college career at Spokane Falls Community College and transferred to the University of Idaho specifically so he could participate in undergraduate research.  He worked in the laboratories of Drs. Jack Sullivan, Olle Pellmyr, and Holly Wichman of the Department of Biological Sciences.  He is a co-author on two published papers and is working on two others.  Jeremiah will be attending Cornell University in the fall pursuing a Ph.D.

Diane A. Haynes Memorial Award (presented to the outstanding graduate student in the College of Science)

  • Daniel R. Joswiak, Geography

Daniel is from Madison, Wisconsin.  He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and completed his M.S. in geography in August of 2004.  He served as a research assistant working with Dr. Vladimir Aizen on his research in glaciers, and has been on expeditions to China and Russia to recover ice cores for study.  He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in geography at the University of Idaho.
