6.2 Electromotive Force, the Standard Hydrogen Electrode and the Nernst Equation

OVERVIEW

The goal here is to come away with an improved understanding of cation hydrolysis and its effect on the solubility of minerals, particularly oxide and hydroxde phases.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. How the strength of reducing and oxidizing agents is defined and measured
  2. The concepts of electromotive force and the electromotive series
  3. The meaning and use of the standard hydrogen electrode
  4. How to use the Nernst equation to calculate redox equilibria
  5. The definition and significance of Eh
