5.5 The Chelate Effect and Metal-Ion Buffers

OVERVIEW

You will gain an understanding of why chelating ligands form much stronger complexes with metal ions than non-chelating ligands (the chelate effect). You will also be introduced to the concept of a metal-ion buffer, in which, in analogy with a pH buffer, changes in the activity of an uncomplexed metal ion are mitigated by chemical equilibria.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. The origin of the chelate effect
  2. The concept of a metal-ion buffer and how to prepare one
