5.3 Theoretical Concepts of Complexation

OVERVIEW

You will learn how to predict which ligands are preferred by which metals using Pearson’s Hard-Soft Acid-Base Principle. The distinction between coordination complexes and ion pairs will be made.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. How to use Pearson’s Principle to predict the preference of metal ions for various ligands
  2. The distinction between coordination complexes and ion pairs
