5.2 Hydrolysis

OVERVIEW

The goal here is to come away with an improved understanding of cation hydrolysis and its effect on the solubility of minerals, particularly oxide and hydroxde phases.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. The definition of cation hydrolysis
  2. How to show hydrolysis as a function of pH on a speciation diagram
  3. How to incorporate cation hydrolysis into solubility calculations and solubility diagrams
  4. The fundamental properties of metal ions that control their tendency to hydrolyze
