5.1 Definitions and General Concepts

OVERVIEW

You will first learn the importance of the form in which an element occurs in solution to properties such as toxicity. After that, a number of definitions and concepts required in the remainder of Lesson 5 are introduced. Finally, you will learn that complexation reactions can be studied via titration, just as acid-based reactions.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. The importance of chemical speciation to toxicity, bioavailability, mobility and solubility
  2. The definition of terms including but not limited to: ligand, central atom, multidentate, chelation, polynuclear, species, coordination number, ligand number, colloid, stability constants
  3. The concept of metal titrations
