4.8 Solubility of Minerals Exhibiting Solid Solution

OVERVIEW

In all the other modules of Lesson 4, it has been assumed that the minerals are pure end-member phases. In this module you will learn how to deal with minerals that are solid solutions between two or more end-member phases.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. How to handle solid solutions in solubility calculations
  2. The importance of solid solutions in controlling trace metal concentrations
  3. The concept of stoichiometric saturation
  4. How to deal with non-ideality in the aqueous solution in the context of solubility calculations
