4.4 Solubility of Carbonate Minerals

OVERVIEW

You should be able to calculate the solubility of carbonate minerals such as calcite under a variety of conditions, e.g., open and closed systems, and to depict these relations graphically.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. How to calculate the solubility of carbonates in a closed system with a constant total carbonate
  2. How to calculate the solubility of carbonates in a closed system in pure water
  3. How to calculate the solubility of carbonates in a closed system in the presence of strong acid or base
  4. How to calculate the solubility of carbonates in an open systems at constant partial pressure of CO2 in the presence or absence of strong acid or base
  5. How solubility of carbonates differs in seawater compared to fresh water
