3.3 Alkalinity and Acidity in Carbonate Systems

OVERVIEW

The main goal of this module is for the student to be able to define and calculate the various types of alkalinity and acidity in carbonate systems. The student will also learn the Gran titration method for the determination of alkalinity in natural samples.

KEY CONCEPTS

  1. The definitions of and interrelationships among alkalinity, p-alkalinity, caustic alkalinity, acidity, CO2-acidity and mineral acidity
  2. How to determine alkalinity in natural water samples using the Gran titration method
