Welcome to Geology 578
Advanced Geochemistry of Natural Waters

University of Idaho
Department of Geological Sciences
Prof. Scott Wood

Spring 2008 Class Schedule:
This spring this course is being offered only as a web-based course. There will be no live version.

Audio Scott's Introduction

Note: Contrary to the audio file
here, there will be no term paper
for GEOL578. Instead, there will
be a final exam. For details see the
course outline page.

  The Berkeley Pit, Butte, Montana
COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. To understand in detail the fundamental (primarily thermodynamic) controls on the composition of natural waters and the response of natural waters to variations in various physico-chemical parameters.
  2. To explore applications to environmental problems, weathering, oceanography, ore deposit formation, etc.
  3. To learn to solve numerical problems related to the behavior of components in natural waters.

There is some overlap between this course and GEOL/HYDR 464/564. However, this course covers fewer topics but in greater depth and detail.

RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND PREPARATION
The minimum expected background preparation is a full year of college-level Chemistry. Familiarity with College-Level Algebra is also expected.

For those whose chemistry skills are weak, it is recommended that you take GEOL 423 (Principles of Geochemistry) or GEOL/HYDR 464/564 (The Geochemistry of Natural Waters) or both before attempting this course.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS STATEMENT
Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have a documented disability. Please notify your instructor(s) during the first week of class regarding accommodation(s) needed for the course. All accommodations must be approved through Disability Support Services located in the Idaho Commons Building, Room 306.
