 | Welcome to Chemistry 101. If you do not already have one, you will need to go to
Computer Services (help desk, Admin 133) and get a University Computer Account set
up immediately. This account is necessary in order for you to have access to our web
site from campus computer labs. They can be reached at 885-APAL or by
email, helpdesk@uidaho.edu I
can be reached at fletcher@uidaho.edu. |
 | Tuesday, May 13. The Final Grades
are now posted on the university website. If you see a grade that
doesn't seem right, contact me by email and we can try and get it straight.
It's surprising the number of people the extra credit put over the pass
line, but I hope you realize you dodged a bullet. I know you can do
better! About 12 of you received an A grade and congratulations to
that group. Approximately the same number received a D grade.
About double that number received a grade of B and the majority of the class
received C grades. To those who failed, it mostly came down to missing
an assignment or two and generally low grades on the exams so I couldn't add
in the lab. Remember, if you completed and passed the lab portion of
the course but failed the lecture part, you can take the course again
without redoing the lab. If you go that route, you need to enroll in
Chem 101 under Section 40. I hope you all
have a great summer! |
 | Friday, May 9. Hello? Hello?
Anybody out there? I now have the grades up for all the homework, the
hour exams and the final. You can check them at the
"Get your Grades" page. If you don't see a
score it is because I didn't receive it. Send me an email if you see
things differently. You can contact me at
fletcher@uidaho.edu. I still
not have the lab grades and I might not get them until Monday. Do not
worry. Your grade will be recorded when I get all the data. We
are not even late until Tuesday at midnight. For those of you on the
borderline for passing, you have enough information here to find out if you
passed the lecture part of the course. Remember, you need 324/600 =
54%. |
 | Thursday, May 8. I graded the
exams this morning. The average was 58% or 116/200 points, which is
dangerously close to that 54% cutoff for passing the lecture. I hope
few of you will be surprised by an unexpected grade but I've already added
points to everyone's score, plus the extra credit. Nobody scored
perfectly but there was one score of 96% or 192/200. I was surprised
at the low average since over a third of the questions came off the old
exams or homework. I will now go to work getting all the grades
together but it will be slow. I will try my best to be finished by
Friday afternoon. |
 | Wednesday, May 7. The Answer Keys
for the Final Exam are available for downloading. You can find them on
the Exam page. I will correct the exams
tomorrow, Thursday, and post the average. I will then begin to work on
assembling all the grades and put them up on the Check Your Grades page.
I will place an announcement on THIS PAGE when the grades begin to become
available. If you don't see an announcement here, don't panic.
There are no changes! |
 | Friday, May 2. I've got a computer
set up and running for now and I've recovered everyone's grades. The
answer key for HW 4 is posted and you can find it on the
Homework page. |
 | Wednesday, April 30. Mea Culpa.
Problem 25 on HW 4 doesn't seem to have a correct answer. I got my
inequalities turned around on answer D. |
 | Wednesday, April 30. The "Get Your
Grades" feature seems to be working. Make sure you follow instructions
to create your password and that you do not use a hyphen in your ID number.
I have not yet entered the scores for HW 2 and 3 but you should see the
correct numbers for Exam 1,2 and 3, HW 1 and Extra Credit. Send me an
email if you see problems. You can find the Get Your Grades on the
Grades page. |
 | Tuesday, April 29. Ok, figured it
out. I can't get the scores up tonight but I will do it in the
morning. Sorry for the delay. |
 | Tuesday, April 29. Looks like I
failed getting your scores up today. I have all the scores loaded but
I cannot get your ID numbers to save correctly so the software can recognize
them. This means that the Get Grades page is still not working so
don't even try. I will get some advice on this on Wednesday and
hopefully get this working. If you want your scores before then, you
can ask after class or come by my office. |
 | Monday, April 28. The Homework
assignment 4 is now available to be downloaded. You can find it on the
Homework page. Also, there will be a help
session Wednesday night in Ren 127 at 6:30 pm |
 | Wednesday, April 23. No class on
Friday, April 25 to make up for the exam Monday night! See you Monday
to finish Chapter 12. Review starts on Wednesday. Also, we will
have a help session tonight (Wednesday.) Room 127, 6 pm. |
 | Friday, April 18. In class today,
I offered a way to generate some extra credit points. On Monday,
anyone who turns in a Haiku poem meeting certain requirements will get 10
points. The Haiku must follow the standard 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5
syllables format and each line must contain an elemental symbol from the
periodic table in a word. You cannot simply use the symbol as an
abbreviation for the element. The symbol must be in a word. You
must type out your entry (no emails) and turn it in Monday in class. I
will choose the top 10-20, present them in class and then the class will
vote. The top two selected will receive an additional 10 points.
An example of what I want is shown here
(with the exception that roar might not have two syllables! Hey, I
wrote it 10 seconds before class and I don't need the extra credit!)
Yours must follow 5, 7, 5 format and cannot be dirty. I have to put it
on the board! |
 | Monday, April 14. The Answer Keys
for hour exam 3 are available. You can find them on the
Exam page. The average is low again at 55%. |
 | Friday, April 11. The answer key
is now available for Homework 3. You can find it on the
Homework page. |
 | Tuesday, April 8. Mea Culpa!
It seems the Homework 3 did not get posted on Monday by 5 as I
promised. I made a rookie mistake. I posted the Homework and it
looked fine on my computer but I guess I neglected to "save" the page once I
put it up. I am pretty sure I "pushed the save button" but I guess I
didn't. I should have checked on the live web page but I didn't.
I apologize if this caused any inconvenience and I appreciate the notes I
received from those who let me know. Thanks and I hope this HW helps
you prepare for the exam. You can find HW 3 on the
Homework page. Remember, we will have a
help session in Ren 127 at 6 pm on Wednesday evening. See you there.
|
 | Monday, March 17. Exclusive to
Section 4. My bad! Somehow, the midterm grades got posted for
all sections but 4. I don't know if I didn't push the right button or
if the data base failed or what, but I apologize and I hope it didn't cause
any problems for you. |
 | Monday, March 3. The Answer Keys
for Hour Exam 2 are now up so you can score your exams. The average is
low on this exam, at 57. You can find the Answer Keys on the
Exams page. |
 | Sunday, March 2. Oops! I
made a mistake on the HW 2 Answer Key that several of you caught and sent
email about. Thanks for that. On problem 18, the correct answer
is that Group I are the alkali metals,
NOT the noble metals. In fact, Group I is very reactive! Also,
remember that Hour Exam 2 is Monday evening. |
 | Saturday, March 1. The Answer Key
for HW 2 is posted. You can find it on the
Homework page. |
 | Saturday, March 1. We have finally
been given a date and time for the Final Exam. The time and date can
be found on the Exam Schedule page. |
 | Monday, February 25. Just a
reminder that we will be meeting for a Help Session tonight at 6 pm in Room
127. Also, Homework 2 is now available for downloading. Oh...
the "Check Your Grades" is still not working so don't bother trying!
One more thing - remember, Exam 2 is scheduled for Monday, March 3. |
 | Monday, February 11. I'm still
working on pinning down a date for the second exam. I should have a
date on Tuesday. For now,
this might help.
Or not. |
 | Monday, February 4. The Answer
Keys for Exam 1 are now available from the Exam Page.
Download the appropriate version (Version A, B or C) and grade your
performance. |
 | Friday, February 1. Hey, didn't we
just miss class? Yes we did! Again, UI classes were cancelled so
HW 1 was not due today. The way we will handle this is that I will
gift every one with a score of 25 on this HW. I'll assume you worked
your brains to mush and you would have scored perfectly. Actually, I
do this so I can put up the key. The Answer Key is up. You will find it on the Homework page.
Please use the weekend to study Chapters 1- 3 and the prologue because Exam
1 is still going to be run as scheduled. Monday night, 7 pm. We
will be in class on Monday (I hope!) |
 | Monday, January 28. Reminder
that there is a help session tonight, Monday, in Renfrew 127 (or close by)
that starts at 7 pm. Stay as long as you like, leave when you like. |
 | Sunday, January 27. The first
Homework assignment is available to be downloaded. You can find it on
the Homework page. |
 | Monday, January 14. This week
we'll be working through Chapter 1. The rough schedule will be Monday:
Measurement (Sections 1 and 4), Wednesday: Scientific Notation (Section 3)
and Significant Figures and Uncertainty in Measurement (Section 2), Friday
continues this and goes on to include Temperature (Section 6) and start Unit
Conversions (Section 5.) We'll try and finish up the section on Unit
Conversions by next Monday and begin Chapter 2. |
 | Monday, January 7. Please get in the
habit of checking these announcements regularly. I will put any
additions to the lectures here and news important to the course. For
example, if an exam date must be changed, I will make an announcement here. |
