Steven Austad, zoology professor, received the 2003 Robert W. Kleemeier Award.  This award is given annually for outstanding research in the field of gerontology by the Gerontological Society of America.  Austad will be speaking at the International Association of Biomedical Gerontology in Cambridge, England.  His topic will entail the social, political and ethical obstacles to human life extension.  Donna Holmes, associate research professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, also will be presenting a poster at the international conference.

UI Biology student Sheri Wardwell won the first place poster award at the Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network Conference in Boise for her research presentation entitled "Developmental Genetics of the Rod Photoreceptor Lineage in Zebrafish."  Shubhangi Prabhudesai, a graduate student in Neuroscience, was awarded an honorable mention at the same conference for her research presentation entitled "Retinoic Acid Signaling in the Embryonic Zebrafish Retina."
