Friends of the Herbarium:

The University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium  established a Friends of the University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium program in 2004.  Friends  helps support the herbarium and increase public and professional awareness of our rich botanical archive.  The UI Herbarium is the official state repository for Idaho plant specimens and the best representative collection of Idaho’s flora in the world.  Housed on the fourth floor of Life Sciences South, the collection consists of over 133,000 vascular plant specimens, 10,000 bryophyte, 5,000 lichen and approximately 20,000 fungus specimens.

 Donations to the The Friends will be used for the following purposes:

        ·        Completing the computer inventory of the herbarium’s collection and making this information web accessible.  Current efforts have resulted in the data basing of approximately 12,000 specimens.  However, salary constraints limit the amount of time that can be spent on this important project.

        ·        Since only archival/museum quality supplies are used for specimen curation, the costs are rather high.  Some examples of expenditures include acid-free mounting paper, folders, fragment packets, pH-neutral glue and gummed tape, and insect-proof storage cases.

          ·        Continued improvements to the University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium and Friends of the Herbarium web page.

          ·        Increased compactor space as the collection is currently at about 95% capacity and renovation of the 4^th floor will allow for badly needed increased compactor space.
