The major focus of Dr. DeSantis' research is vertebrate neurobiology.
It includes studies on the structure and function of sensory and motor neurons; synaptic specificity; and development, degeneration and regeneration of neural tissue. Neuroendocrinology and invertebrate neurobiology are also of interest. Utilizing light and electron microscopy, electrophysiology, and monoclonal antibodies, he hopes to develop strategies and products to recognize and repair damaged nervous tissue.
He team-teaches gross anatomy and neuroscience courses in the
medical curriculum and graduate courses related to the nervous
system. He is also the faculty advisor for the Beta Eta
chapter of the Phi Sigma Honor
Society.
